Mosque set ablaze in Mau, sparks tension [ Sunday, November 13, 2005 08:57:19 pm PTI ]

MAU
(UP): After a lull for a few days, a mosque was set ablaze on Sunday and one of
its doors gutted triggering tension in the sensitive Sabzi Mandi area of
riot-torn Mau where night curfew is still in
place.
District authorities
quickly replaced the doors to ease the situation and security personnel had been
deployed in strength in the town to maintain calm, officials
said.
"Barring this act of
arson, no untoward incident has been reported from anywhere in the district,"
they said.
Day curfew had been
lifted in some areas yesterday in view of an improvement in the situation with
no signs of tension in any part of the town for the past couple of
days.
They said if there was a
continued improvement, curfew could be lifted by Monday, but a high-level
meeting would review the situation before taking a
decision.
Security personnel
were continuing round-the-clock vigil and the administration was concentrating
on helping the locals reconstruct their damaged property and rehabilitation of
those affected by the communal clashes during the Dussehra festival last month.
